Firefighter Spotlight - April 2014

Firefighter Chris Gonzales

Why did you join the Hendersonville Fire Department?

After four years in the military, I knew I wanted a career with camaraderie and brotherhood. The fire department is great for that and unlike the military, allows me to put my family first.

What do you like most about HFD?

There are many things: the guys, no two calls are ever the same, firehouse meals, and contributing to the departmentís improvement. One thing I try to remain focused on is, when we are on a call, it is often one of the worst days of that personís life. We have a chance to help that person and their family cope with whatever they are going through.

What is the most significant development in your career?

The opportunity for personal development is huge for someone who wants it. I have experienced this through in-house training, cross-training with other agencies across the state, formal education, firefighter TUFF challenges, 9-11 Memorial stair climbs, honor guard events, National Fire Academy training, etc. I believe personal development is significant because it keeps employees engaged and builds a stronger workforce.

Are you involved with any community activities?

I am helping develop the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) for the city, which will educate the public about disaster preparedness and emergency response.

What are your future plans?

To stay focused on doing my job well, making this community a better place to live, and having fun while doing it.
