Firefighter Spotlight - September 2014

Firefighter Ryan Schroyer

Why did you join the Hendersonville Fire Department?

I joined HFD because I wanted a career that was meaningful. I wanted to feel good about the efforts I make in life. I had a background as a college and professional athlete and always enjoyed the physical challenges that they provided me. The fire service has provided me with the opportunity continually challenge me both physically as well as mentally.

What do you like most about HFD?

Apart from the work itself, I enjoy the brotherhood. HFD is a group of individuals that have become a part of my family. We come together in times of need and are a support system that is unique; one that I have not seen in any other organization.

What is the most significant development in your career?

I would say that the most significant development in my career has been that I have found a confidence in my knowledge and abilities as a firefighter. I have learned that through observation, training, education, and practice, you can learn a lot about yourself.

Are you involved with any community activities?

My wife and I stay involved in animal rescue efforts around the Middle Tennessee area. We have rescued and found forever homes for many dogs over the years. We stay connected to as many rescue groups and organizations as possible and assist in any way we can.

What are your future plans?

My plans for the future are to work on being the best father and Christian I can be meanwhile dedicating myself to furthering my knowledge and skill as it relates to my career. I would love to pursue a paramedic license and explore other cutting edge firefighting techniques.

Additional Information

I am originally from Arizona where I went to high school and college. I received my Bachelor's degree from Arizona State University.

My wife and I were introduced in Arizona and moved to Tennessee about seven years ago. Tennessee is truly our home and we could not ask for a better environment to raise our family.
